Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke Backs Urgent Waitangi Tribunal Education Inquiry
Hauraki-Waikato MP and Te Pāti Māori Education Spokesperson Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke has expressed strong support for the urgent Waitangi Tribunal inquiry (Wai 3553) into proposed Government education reforms.
The claim, brought by Northland iwi and hapū alongside education advocates, raises concerns that the reforms could weaken support for Māori learners, language, culture, and the Crown’s obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Maipi-Clarke says the inquiry provides an important opportunity for Māori voices to be heard and for the impacts of the proposed changes to be fully assessed. She is calling on the Government to pause the reforms until the Tribunal has completed its investigation.
The inquiry is expected to have significant implications for Māori learners, whānau, kura, and future generations, with advocates emphasising the need for an education system that upholds Te Tiriti and supports success for all tamariki.

An update filed with the Waitangi Tribunal has highlighted significant public support for an urgent hearing into the Treaty Principles Bill, with 47,521 people backing the call for the matter to be heard.
The submission, supported by the Toitū Te Tiriti movement, seeks urgent consideration of concerns surrounding the proposed review of Treaty clauses and the potential implications for Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Advocates say the strong public response reflects widespread interest in ensuring any changes affecting Te Tiriti are carefully examined through a transparent and independent process. The update has been provided to the Tribunal as part of ongoing proceedings relating to the proposed legislation.
